Prints that don't compete: if one piece speaks, the other stays quiet

A print is a garment that talks. Stripes, checks, florals, a bold graphic, a big logo: all of it asks for attention. And just like any conversation, when two people talk at once you can't hear either one.

The rule that never fails: one print per outfit. If the shirt is checked, the pants go plain. If the skirt is floral, the top stays quiet and lets it shine. The gift hiding inside every print: its palette. Every print carries two, three, four colors inside it. That's your map for the rest of the outfit. A floral shirt on an ecru background with olive green and a touch of rust? Ecru pants, or olive ones, will go with it like they were made for each other, because they repeat a color that's already in the piece. Careful: texture is not print. The ribbing of a sweater, the fine herringbone of a blazer, the tone-on-tone weave of a good fabric: that's not a piece talking, that's a piece that's just well dressed. Textures add richness without asking for attention, and you can mix them freely. The litmus test: if from three steps away it reads "gray" and you only see the pattern up close, it's texture. If you can see the pattern from three steps away, it's a print and it counts as one.

Isn't print mixing in fashion? It is, and done well it's spectacular: same color family, very different scales (one big motif with one tiny one). But it's stunt driving: easy to get wrong, and little reward when it only half-works. Until your eye is trained, the one-print rule guarantees the result a hundred percent of the time.
